Adrift aloft a net hangs in tow of dirigibles secured by tether to the ground below invisibly misplaced from hydrogen displaced in the twilight harbinger full moon glow summer skies September ’39 sounds of thunder obscured sly-feathered devils cast shadows and underneath wingspans they’re seeding the low-lands as the shell-stocked battleship's battery blows no solidarity now I let go Danzig my port of call furloughed so my written note dire words by letter set in envelope most precious of cargo I sent to the bureau when the wall rumbled tumbled down they’d taken the post taste of solemnity now I let go sudden upset sunset postmen soaked in gasoline they cure set ablaze in a haze of smoke their magazines rendering ashes endlessly so my message will never make it home no vacancy for liberty an enemy victory massive catastrophes casualties injuries and families sentenced to pillory a failed delivery the war came swiftly grappling breathlessly now I let go
